You can find information for many septic systems online. The Department of Environmental Conservation is still loading data so the information is incomplete, but still valueable. A search for septic systems will often yield an as-built survey. The septic documentation and the as-built survey are very useful information for a buyer.
The septic information may or may not be current. But at least it will give you some idea of what has been installed on the property. You will learn something about the soils on the property and may even find a septic test or two from a past sale.
