Welcome to Big Lake

Big Lake draws people who are interested in the many recreational opportunities the area provides. It is famous for its various water-related summer activities, thanks to its namesake lake, and provides access to an abundance of lakes, rivers, and snow machine trails that traverse the Susitna Valley. The area spans over 138 square miles and has a population of approximately 3,000. With a commute to Anchorage of about 60 miles, Big Lake is somewhat remote and, lakefront homes aside, real estate prices can be somewhat cheaper here than in other spots in the Mat-Su Valley.

Summer in Big Lake offers an abundance of water activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating. In winter when the lake freezes up, people create an “ice road” on the lake, making the surrounding areas across the lake more accessible. Snow machining, cross country skiing, and dog mushing are popular activities in Big Lake. Martin Buser, a famous sled dog racing champion, operates his training facility, Happy Trails Kennels, in the area.

The small town of Big Lake provides all basic needed services, including a grocery store, an elementary school, a library, a fire station, restaurants, and an ice rink.
