Wasilla, Alaska

Welcome to Wasilla, Alaska

Wasilla is the fourth-largest city in Alaska, behind Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks. With a population of just under 10,000, it is also the largest city in the Matanuska Susitna Borough and was named after Chief Wasilla, a Dena’ina Chief. Wasilla is most famous outside of Alaska for being the home of Sarah Palin, the Alaskan hockey mom who started as Mayor of Wasilla, became Governor of Alaska, and then ended up a Vice Presidential candidate, serving as the running mate of John McCain in the 2008 US Presidential elections.

Established where the Alaska Railroad and the Old Carle Wagon Road (now called Wasilla Fishhook) intersected, Wasilla was historically an agricultural town, but the building of the Parks Highway that began in 1975 encouraged Wasilla to develop into a bedroom community for those that work in Anchorage or on the North Slope in the oilfields. It is just a 45 to 50 minutes drive from Anchorage, so many work in the city but call Wasilla home. Some choose to live in Wasilla because they want to be closer to recreational activities, and others because the housing prices are slightly lower than those in the city of Anchorage.
