As I was pondering the rising cost of housing here in the Mat-Su Valley and across the nation I thought it might be reasonable to expect people to buy smaller houses. So I took a look at the last five years and was extremely surprised to find out I was wrong.
Of course, if you ask my wife she will say that I’m always surprised to find out I’m wrong!
Here is a five-year comparison of the average size of a house, along with the average price per square foot for a house.
Year. Size. $ sq ft. total sold year to date.
2023. 1,839. $229. 831
2022. 1,848. $215. 1,187
2021. 1,936. $184. 1,130
2020. 1,869. $161 925
2019 1,840. $156. 948
So there you go! People are finding ways to afford the same house year after year. I was really surprised to learn this.
