Welcome to Sutton-Alpine

The Sutton-Alpine area, also just called Sutton, is a region in Alaska that sits between Palmer and Glennallen. The place began as a station of the Matanuska Branch of the Alaska Railroad. The site was a massive coal deposit, with Eska and Jonesville serving as its two main mining camps. The region provided Anchorage and the base with coal by way of the Alaska Railroad. People today love to indulge in the quiet scenery that was the byproduct of this era in Alaska, with preserved remnants of these camps remaining to this day.

Sutton's rural community has a population of about 1,500 people who enjoy the peaceful, simple life of the area. The region's most well-recognized landmark is the Matanuska Glacier, a popular destination for those that seek a thrilling adventure around the icy trails and enjoy ice climbing. There's also the Matanuska River at its southern edge, which provides a perfect spot for fishing and whitewater rafting. Fishing is even more bountiful in Moose Creek. Bikers and hikers will have a wonderful time on Sutton's many trails, including Palmer-Moose Creek Railroad Trail, which connects to Palmer. The Alpine Historical Park is an outdoor museum opened every summer that features the remnants of the coal camps here in the past.

Sutton is a very small community that offers basic services for its residents, including a library, an elementary school, a post office, and a bar and restaurant.
