Introducing Point MacKenzie
Point MacKenzie is a region of the Matanuska Susitna Borough along the Knik Arm and adjacent to Anchorage. The point was once known as Dilhi Tunch'del'usht Beydeg, or the "point where we transport hooligans," and historically was a trading site where the people of the Talkeetna Mountains would trade goods with the Dena'ina people. Today the area is sparsely populated but home to past, current, and future commercial and industrial projects that provide residents with hope about future economic development in the state.
Point Mackenzie is home to Port Mackenzie, a 14 square mile commercial and industrial development. There are plans to finish a rail extension to Port Mackenzie, which will provide mining and timber industries a more direct route for export. It was also home of the University of Alaska’s Agricultural Experimental Station, which was sold off in large parcels to farmers. There are plans in the works to to develop a 100 mile road through the backcountry to provide access to a large gold mine in the Western Susitna Valley. Goose Creek Correctional Center is also located at Point Mackenzie.
Point Mackenzie is an undeveloped area with many opportunities for recreation, but little in the way of services for residents, who must travel to Wasilla and Anchorage for shopping, dining, and other needed services.
