Nome Alaska Photos, Iditarod Race, March 2017
Nome in March is exactly what Alaska is all about. Lots of snow, lots of sun, moderate, (for Alaska), temperatures, and of course…THE IDITAROD RACE!
All of Nome is waiting for the first Musher to arrive today. Mitch Seavey is expected to win the race by this evening. The whole town is buzzing. Every public building seems to be hosting one activity or another. Craft shows feature things like hand sewn sea otter hats, seal skin mittens, ivory carvings, and quiviut shawls. This is a DIFFERENT kind of town that’s “fur” sure.
But I didn’t come to see the Iditarod like everyone else did, although I certainly won’t pass up the chance to see the winner arrive. I came to see my daughter who works in Nome. She kept telling me how great this little town is and I should come to visit. So here I am, I leave tomorrow. This really is a cool little city. I took a lot of pictures but could take a lot more. Here are a few.
Old Gold Dredges. There are lots of these around town.
Crabbing in the Bering Sea
Groceries in Nome. People are always complaining about the cost of groceries but I was amazed at the selection available. Fresh groceries!!! Nome has avacodos from Mexico???!!
