The Bogard-Engstrom Road area is one of Wasilla’s hidden gems. With the icy roads and constant stop-and-go of the Palmer-Wasilla Hwy, lately I have found myself trying to avoid it as much as possible and take routes with less stop lights. Bogard road has really grown on me in these last few months! The speed limit is usually around 50, with minimal slowdowns depending on the cars in front of you. There are really only three stop lights on the entire stretch.

Engstrom Road is only about 2 miles from the Palmer-Wasilla and Trunk Road intersection. You can also eventually connect with Wasilla-Fishhook Road with a few turns.

Subdivisions include: Shorewood, Hart Lake Estates, Horizon Estates, Wolf Lake, Aspen Ridge Estates, Harmony Acres and Rover Ridge. There are no less than 5 lakes in the area, and “one of the premier private airports in Alaska:” Wolf Lake Airport.

This area offers beautiful mountain views and quiet privacy, with quick commutes to Palmer, Wasilla and even Anchorage. The following photos were taken off Engstrom Road and its connecting streets. Click on any photo to see a larger version.

If you enjoy authentic Greek and Mediterranean food stop driving by and drive right in. Good service and great food await you.

I had the Chicken Pita Sandwich. Excellent.

And if you like real Gyro’s, I mean the real thing…their’s are second to none.

The interior is not showy, but neo modern warehouse chic. Local art on the walls, comfy chairs and sofas in the corner, exposed steel beams on the ceiling.

They often feature local music and art, as well as communty events. Check their facebook page for updates.
I finished a walk-through of a house for someone who needs to know the market value at about 5:15PM. I was out by Settlers Bay and was scheduled for a Settlers Bay Architectural Control committee hearing at 6:30 in the Settlers Bay Lodge.

So I had about an hour to spare and decided to see if I could make it out to Point Mackenzie and back.

Weeeelll. Point Mac is a little further out there than I remembered. It seems I said that they last time I drove out there. When I passed Holstein Road I recalled from the map that it was still a ways further so after glancing at the time reluctantly turned around.

On the way back I stopped at Point Mackenzie General Store for a diet rockstar to keep me

pt mac store inside

going.

This is a neat little store, Owners Jeff and Julie Wendt are well set up to service visitors as Point Mackenzie grows. They have groceries, gas, cabin rentals, RV parking, showers, espresso, fenced storage, and a cafe. I was wishing for more time to look around at the attractive log cabins but time was a’wastin so I headed on out, with a reminder to myself to stay for a burger or something next time.

On the way back to Settlers Bay I had to stop at Knik to take a photo of the receding tide of the Knik Arm. No, I didn’t see any beluga whales but according to the studies they spend a lot of the winter in this area. I wonder what in the world they are finding to eat in those waters.

Knik Arm

Sorry about the poor quality photos, I only had my iphone with me.

He was ushered by by several snowmachines pacing the first musher on the trail.

We enjoyed watching all the teams come by, they were running well at that point only about 10 miles into the race. The mushers were in good moods and high-fived all the kids standing by the trail.

With 71 dog teams, hundreds and maybe thousands of snowmachines, constant airplanes and helicopters it certainly wasn’t a quiet day in the wilderness, but fun nevertheless and has become a family tradition for all the families and cousins. It was nice to visit with friends that we don’t get to often see and such a relaxed setting while waiting for the next team down the trail. For a taste of the day, watch the video below.

I was on my way home from Anchorage yesterday and was a little early for an appointment in the Butte so I stopped off to see what was happening at the Eklutna Tailrace.

It was a beautiful day to be fishing. I didn’t see any fish but talked with a some people who said there were a few rolling. The action wasn’t hot but the weather certainly was. I think it was close to 75 degrees without a hint of wind.

The cool think about this fishing hole is that there is great handicap access. A wheelchair bound person can wheel right to the waters edge and fish…they chose one of the best fishing spots for the wheel chair as well.

It was at the Wasilla Lake Park at the corner of the Parks Highway and Crusey Street. The photo below expresses the general feeling of the crowd.

Don Young showed up to give a speech and there was also an open mike for people to have their say. Looks like this will likely be an annual event.

If we have much more of this global warming we are going to freeze to death.

Hopefully this will be the coldest day of the year. At least we know that every day is getting lighter between now and June 21.
